Another shot of the queen--she's in the lower center. When a queen dies and a new one is made, she will take a maiden flight out of the hive followed by the drones (the male bees). There drones from another colony perform their only function: to fertilize the new queen. Once she has mated with multiple drones she will return to the hive with enough sperm stored within her to fertilize eggs for the rest of her life. The queen chooses whether or not to fertilize an egg. Fertilized eggs become worker bees, unfertilized eggs become drones. The worker bees (females) forage for food (nectar and pollen), make honey, care for the queen, tend the nursery, etc.
